Fitness Fun
The
Maternal Fitness Program, taught exclusively in New York City
since 1991, is now out on Video and DVD in order to make this
program available to women everywhere.
The Maternal Fitness
Program is an exercise program that prepares women for an easier
labor and a faster recovery. The foundation of the program is
the proprietary “Tupler Technique” abdominal exercises.
The program was
founded by Julie Tupler, RN who is a Certified Fitness
Instructor with the National Council on Strength & Fitness, a
Certified Childbirth Educator, author of Maternal Fitness
(Simon & Schuster, 1996) and advisory board member of Shape
Fit Pregnancy.
Julie says that the
program has two main purposes:
1. To educate women
about the changes their bodies go through and how to safely
exercise with those changes, and
2. To provide
specific abdominal and pelvic floor exercises to teach women how
to push effectively during labor.
The Video or DVD
Series is a 212-minute program.
The first 115
minutes tell all about the BAKS Basics. This is an acronym for
the foundation exercises taught in the first two sessions of the
Maternal Fitness Workshop. BAKS stands for: B- Belly
Breathing and Belly Dancing, A- Abdominals and Aerobics, K-
Kegels and S- Squatting, Stretching, and Strengthening.
There are very descriptive animations of the abdominal muscles
and pushing techniques in this section.
The second part of
the program is the Maternal Fitness workout with the emphasis on
strengthening the abdominal muscles.
The Maternal Fitness
Video or DVD is an educational and entertaining program
detailing a woman who gets pregnant and goes through the
Maternal Fitness Program. When Julie does the exercises wrong she
is corrected! Women can laugh and learn the program as they
watch PC & the Pelvic Floor doing the “Kegel Rap” or a Jewish
Mother Placenta singing “Take Me With You” to the baby.
