Pumpkin Maternity
Rocker-turned-designer Pumpkin Wentzel is often cited in the
media as the leader of a fashion revolution.
She founded Pumpkin
Maternity in 1997 with husband and former bandmate Charlie
Gansa. What inspired them to put down their guitars? "I wanted
women to have a resource where they could feel absolutely
beautiful and normal, that didn't feel patronizing or cutesy. So
that's what I try to be. I offer clothes, beauty items, books
and accessories that I have test driven myself while pregnant."
Wentzel also hosts
parenting-pertinent events in her SoHo store in New York
City-- family concerts, book release parties and fashion shows.
"Just talking to another mom-to-be can be very centering," she
exclaims.
What's at the center
of her radical collection? Her popular UnderBelly line features
low-cut bootleg pants, jeans and capris tailored precisely for
pregnancy. She's got the perfect black dress that grows with
you, thanks to an ingenious shirring construction. She even
sells open belly skirts that eliminate layers when and where you
need them least! Pretty simple and very cool. I guess that's why
Ana Gasteyer, Kate Winslet, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Kate Moss
all wear Pumpkin's clothes.
